Saar's Brocante
Hetty and Jan (both 55) once lived in an old, renovated bakery. Today, they live together with their two dogs, Romi and Sky, in a large, old farmhouse, surrounded by nature. But this didn’t come about without a struggle; because this house was once an old-fashioned doll’s house. Photography and text: Margreet Frens.
Hetty and Jan’s house is a home to be envious of. It just oozes space and charm, but an enormous amount of work has gone into it. “When we lived in the old bakery in Drongelen, we wanted more space around us. After searching for a few years – we were living temporarily on a campsite – we stumbled upon this house. It was exactly what we were looking for. It was the perfect house to make into our own.” Over time, the couple has thoroughly renovated and extended the house. The stable has been demolished and rebuilt and is now their living room. The old bedroom became the bathroom, the former living room became a bedroom and the old hallway was incorporated into the kitchen. “We then turned this into a workplace and a year ago, we added another 6,5 meters which has since become our kitchen. We’re really quite proud of it, because we have designed and done most of the work ourselves.” The meadow around the house has now been partially transformed into a garden and roaming the remaining meadow you’ll find the couples’ Shetland ponies, sheep and chickens.
