'This house was in a terrible state'
Dream house among farmlands
One of the nice things about the brocante world, is that you often hear of other interesting addresses through the grapevine. On this occasion, I received a tip from Marcel from Schipluiden. I met Esther, a friend of his, when I photographed his house some time ago. And now the three of us are on our way to Irene, another mutual friend, in ‘s Gravenzande. Partners in crime thus, when it comes to brocante. Photography and text: Margreet Frens.
“This house was in a terrible state when it was for sale”, Irene tells us. “When my husband Janus brought it to my attention, my reaction was: ‘Let’s not take this on right now’. His work in greenhouse construction means that he’s often abroad which was also the case when this arose. Moreover, there were extensive construction plans for the land behind this house,” she continues. “And yet I fell in love instantly. This house has something about it. We had only really looked once, after which we drove past it several times. Subsequently we called the estate agent and within no time, the house was ours.”
